Slot machines were invented in the late 1800's by a man named Charles Fey, but did not become popular until Bugsy Siegel installed them in his Flamingo Hilton hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Slot machines owe a lot of their popularity to the fact that they can be played at the player's own pace with no skill required. They have evolved over the years from simple three reel machines with each reel containing 20 symbols to the random number generated machines in today's casinos with each reel sometimes containing hundreds of symbols. Slot machines are not the worst gamble in a casino. That distinction belongs to the craps table.

The most important feature in older slot machines is the number of reels and the number of symbols. The fewer the number of reels and symbols, the easier it is to get a winning combination.
To determine the odds of let's say a three reel machine with 20 symbols where the object is to get a jackpot symbol on each reel, you multiply 20 X 20 X 20 which equals 8,000. The odds of hitting the jackpot on this machine are 7,999 to 1.
Now take another example where there are 120 symbols per reel rather than 20. You multiply 120 X 120 X 120 which equals 1,728,000. The odds of hitting the jackpot on this machine are 1,727,999 to 1!
The newer slot machines found in casinos today feature random number generators that determine the number of symbols per reel based on the amount of the jackpot. The higher the jackpot the greater the number of symbols per reel. This is done to insure that the jackpots are hit rarely enough for the casino to generate enough money to pay off the jackpot and produce a profit.
Most slot machines are programmed to payout between 80 and 99 percent of coins played which includes jackpot payoffs. Although several machines may be located beside each other and look identical, they could each be programmed to return an entirely different percentage rate.

There are basically two different types of slot machines; flat rate and progressives. Flat rate machines have a set jackpot payoff while progressive machine's jackpot continues to grow with each coin inserted until hit. The rules to slots are quite simple. You deposit coins (usually 1-4) and spin the reels. In a physical casino, you spin the reels by either pushing a button or pulling on a lever, whichever you prefer. In an online casino, you would use your mouse to click on the button or lever. A straight slot will pay your winning combinations according to a predetermined schedule. A progressive slot machine will pay you in a similar way unless you hit the progressive jackpot. When you hit the jackpot, you typically win a large amount of money. It is this large progressive jackpot that is often times the main lure for many slot players. You may go a long while without making much money, but if you hit the big one, then you instantly win a load of cash. It's a pretty attractive proposition, and an irresistible one for the true gambler.
There are one or more horizontal lines across the window of the slot machine. If a certain combination falls on a horizontal line when the reels stop, you are a winner. Payouts vary by machine, and by the number of lines you choose to play. Please do not be tempted by people who try to sell you the secrets of winning on the slots in either book form or over the internet. Slot tips
There is no big secret or winning systems for any type of slot machines. Every spin is random and you can in no way effect that.
Before playing a slot machine, always find out what the minimum number of coins is and what the coin denomination is. This is the first step to
familiarizing yourself with what kind of game you're about to play and whether or not the cost of each spin is something you can afford to lose. You should also decide how much money you are going to play with and then select a slot machine that has a coin size to suit your budget. Try to stay away from multi pay line slots. Playing the single pay line allows the player to enjoy the game for a longer period of time, without risking too much money in one go. If you do want to play the progressives slots it is very important to play the maximum bet. The jackpot is only available when you play the maximum bet. If you don't play the maximum bet and hit the jackpot symbols you will receive a small win and the jackpot will keep growing.
In general playing maximum coins is a good strategy. On almost all slots the top jackpot is much better when playing maximum coins.
Look for machines that offer wild symbols, these can increase your chances of either completing pay lines or doubling your win.
The most important thing to remember is to play to your budget, don't exceed it, if you win, great, cash out. If you lose you can always come back another day. Have fun.

Watch the trends!
In gambling, there is something called a streak or a trend. When the
trends are good, the chances of winning are greatly enhanced. The
trick is finding these good trends.
Let's say you bet one coin until Lady Luck smiles on you. You then
increase your bet to two coins. You again get zippo, so you keep playing
one coin until you win - and now you go to two coins. You win again

machine) you stay at max coins. You continue betting max coins as long
as the previous play was a winner.
As soon as you catch a clunker, dive down to the first level and bet
one coin. You see what the theory is all about? You are betting small
when losing and going higher when wins are occurring.
If you get bored, tired, itchy, edgy and impatient, you'll yearn to bet
max coins, even though the machine is cold, with the hope that you are
due to win.
Please understand the power of streaks and trends in these
slots. The best way to handle them is by pulling back your bets in these
cold times and increasing to max coins only when things heat up.
