Luxor is named after the ancient city of the same name in northern Egypt. Reproductions of artifacts from Luxor and the Karnak Temple line the walls of the 30-story, pyramid-shaped hotel along with copies of hieroglyphics found in the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. A 29 million cubic-foot atrium soars to the apex of the pyramid.
Guests enter the Strip resort beneath a massive sphinx, pass a lavish outdoor fountain and are transported to their rooms on "inclinators," elevators that travel up the interior slope of the 350-foot pyramid at a 39-degree angle. At night, the world's most powerful beam of light shines straight up from the apex of the pyramid and is visible to airplanes at cruising altitude.
The hotel opened twin towers in 1997 as part of a $400 million expansion, boosting the room count to more than 4,400. In 1997, Luxor opened the first IMAX 3-D theater in Las Vegas. The 312-seat theater features an eight-channel, multi-dimensional, digital sound system. Mandalay Resort Group owns the Luxor.
